Project 1K: 1-4

One feature of this blog will be Project 1K. It's my goal to read 1,000 comic book issues in one year. Realistically, it is a way for me to blow through the ever growing to read pile I have.

We'll start with what I picked up at Free Comic Book Day, which was last Saturday. FBCD is a marketing event between comics publishers, the one national comic book distribution company and retailers. Basically, as a way to get new customers to visit their local comic shop, the retailer has all kinds of free comic book issues to give to people in the hopes that they come back.

Unfortunately, it seems that most of the major publishers never capitalize enough on Free Comic Book Day. Marvel gives out oneshots that may or may not connect to anything. DC usually reprints something and so on.

I wind up trying out the kids titles, because they seem to always seem to be more fun.

DC had a reprint of Tiny Titans #1, which is a kid friendly reimagination of the Teen Titans, set in a Muppet Baby like world where Trigon is their teacher and Deathstroke is their principal. This leads to some awkward moments for Raven and Ravager respectably. Great humor. It was nice to read some well done two-three page stories. The writer and artist are going to be at Wizard World Philadelphia, and I am looking forward to meeting them.

The Gumby issue was a fun read. Actually, the whole Gumby series is great. Last year, it won the Eisner Award for best youngster book. The book was black and white, but that's logical considering it was a free book.

After reading the two Disney books, both dealing with inhabitants of Carl Barks' Duckburg, makes me long for more Ducktales books.

996 more comics to go.

Welcome to Comicore

I'll admit it.

I have way too many comic books.

It's not that I don't like comic books, but I usually get side tracked and I don't get to read them.

Enter Comicore.

I'm going to blog about my comic book conquests. Enjoy.
